As a result of a partnership between CESAB, CHAM – Centre for the Humanities (NOVA-FCSH), and the Yale Program in Jewish Studies, an international workshop on mobility and migration in the Iberian Atlantic will take place from April 22 to 24, 2026, at Yale University in the United States. The event, titled “Mobility, Migration, and Belonging in the Early Global Iberian Atlantic”, brings together specialists in Atlantic History and Jewish Studies to discuss dynamics of displacement and belonging in the early modern period.
The initiative aims to analyze phenomena such as the Sephardic diaspora, as well as other forms of mobility, including the forced migration of Africans and the displacement of Indigenous populations.
The organizers emphasize the importance of understanding how social, economic, religious, and political factors shaped identities and transatlantic networks.
The event’s organizers – CESAB researcher Susana Bastos Mateus, along with Oren Okhovat and Pedro Cardim – hope that the workshop will contribute to deepening knowledge of the historical dynamics of mobility and belonging in the Atlantic world.
