Ronaldo Vainfas,

The article focuses the experience of New Christian-new Portuguese who had passed from Amsterdam to Brazil in the XVIIth century, during the Dutch conquest of Pernambuco, between 1630 and 1650. It discusses the concept of New Jew proposed by Yosef Kaplan related to the cultural identity of these men in the Sephardic diaspora. The research is based upon several documents of the Portuguese Inquisition.

Between the end of the sixteenth century and the first few decades of the century which followed, the discrimination against people of Jewish origin and their relatives became ever more concrete and common in Portuguese society. Laws and institutions ratified the Iberian ideal of a kingdom founded upon the “purity of blood”. In order to defend the honour of his family, which he considered to be of noble and Old Christian origin (in spite of having Jewish ancestors), the nobleman Gastão de Abrunhosa initiated an internation protest which reached the Roman Curia and the court of Castille. Documents preserved in Portuguese archives, (Arquivo da Torre do Tombo, Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboa, Biblioteca da Ajuda), Spain, (Arquivo General de Simancas) and Italy (Archivio della Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede, Archivio Segreto Vaticano, Archivio di Stato di Firenze, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana), reveal the goings on of one of the most outstanding cases of resistence against the segregational tendencies which afflicted Portuguese society in the Early Modern period. The example of Abrunhosa´s lucid attack against the functioning of the Portuguese Holy Office, in particular, against the use of individual witnesses, represents an invitation to historians to rethink the struggle between the Inquistion and the New Christians in a more complex and ample way.

António Andrade, De Ferrara a Lisboa: tribulações do cristão-novo Alexandre Reinel, preso no cárcere do Santo Ofício

Alexandre Reinel stands in the number of those New Christians caught by the Portuguese Inquisition namely in the second half of the 16th Century on returning to Portugal from the Portuguese Sephardic communities settled in Antwerp, Ferrara or Venice. Both a contact list and some previously unidentified letters were appended to his criminal deed whose recognition only possible through this investigation sheds some light on the characterization of the parts involved in this enigmatic epistolary. The crossing of all the available data concerning Alexandre Reinel and no only from his criminal deed in the Portuguese Inquisition as permitted hence to reconstruct and closely perceive is activities, and those of the clan Reinel-Abendana towards a better understanding of their importance in creating a safe net supporting the New Christians endeavor to flee Portugal.

Fabrizio Lelli, Messianic Expectations and Portuguese Geographical Discoveries: Yohanan Alemanno's Renaissance curiosity

In the second half of the fifteenth century, and especially after the fall of Constantinople into the hands of the Muslims, Italian society became especially concerned with the idea of the end times. Such an eschatological conception - which was common among both Jews and Christians - had been triggered also by Portuguese geographical discoveries, that shed new light on African and Asian regions facing the Indian Ocean, and which had been long related to the Messianic advent. This article deals with the reception of information about Portuguese discoveries by one of the most outstanding Italian Jewish scholars, Yohanan Alemanno (1435 - after 1506). Alemanno's intellectual research ranged over most domains of Jewish knowledge, focusing also on messianism. Although mainly founding his conceptions on traditional sources, Alemanno also drew on geographical information circulating in contemporary non-Jewish society. The notes on messianic events related to Portuguese discoveries included in Alemanno's Liqqutim (Notebook) can be counted among the very first testimonies by a Jewish intellectual on the documented existence of Jews in India and Ethiopia.

Parte II

Florbela Veiga Frade,

In the 16th and 17th centuries Portuguese New-Christians spread all over the world. This paper deals with the religiosity and ways of life in three Portuguese Communities: Antwerp, Roterdam and Hamburg. These communities had usually a house of cult or an esnoga where New-Christians could pray and celebrate several Judaic ceremonies, fasts or fests and join in the Shabbat reunion. The Portuguese New-Christians maintained Judaic practices and rituals for generations, regardless having or not local authorities’ permission to do it. As a norm, Jewish practises were not allowed but were privately maintained helped by people who preserved the precepts of Judaism although most of the times there were no rabbis involved.

François Soyer, The Massacre of the New Christians of Lisbon in 1506: A New Eyewitness Account

On Sunday 19 April 1506, the city of Lisbon was the scene of an explosion of violence that lasted four days and is estimated to have resulted in the violent deaths of anywhere between 1,000 to 4,000 men, women and children, singled out because of the fact that they were “New Christians” (Jewish converts to Christianity). This article deals with an as yet unexamined account of the massacre of 1506 that is contained in a manuscript entitled Chronicas dos Reys de Portugal e sumarios das suas vidas com a historia das Indias e Armadas que se mandarom athe o anno de 1533, whose authorship has been attributed to Gaspar Correia (c.1492-c.1560). Written at least partly by an eyewitness, this account of the massacre of the New Christians of Lisbon provides historians not only with new details about the massacre itself but also with a new perspective of that terrible event, one that is seemingly hostile to the New Christians. The historical importance of Gaspar Correia’s account of the massacre of 1506 deserves to be recognised and it merits a place alongside better known sources, such as the works of Ibn Verga, Isaac Ibn Faradj, or Damião de Góis.

Günes Isiksel, A letter of chahzade Selîm to Charles IX on the “Nassi Affair”

In this short study, not only the context of one of the first and indeed, rare examples of Ottoman princes’ involvement in European diplomacy is shown but also a unpublished copy of the Prince Selîm’s letter to the French Court following his banker Joseph Nassi’s solicitations is presented.

Herman Prins Salomon,

The prayer hanoten (“He who dispenses”) that is recited in Hebrew contains -- in the Portuguese synagogue service of Amsterdam -- an insertion in Portuguese. This regular presence of the Portuguese language in a community which lost the use of Portuguese as a means of communication more than a century and a half ago, does not fail to arouse the curiosity of occasional visitors. In this article I attempt to contrast the presence and development of the Portuguese insertion in the Amsterdam service, where it is at home, is recited very frequently and continues to appear in the printed Order of Service, with its well-nigh absence and non-development in the majority of other Portuguese and Spanish-Portuguese Jewish communities, where it left few or no published traces of its one-time presence. Thus we are dealing with an original feature of the Amsterdam Portuguese synagogue, very much intertwined with its history which, although it was transmitted to those of The Hague, Curaçao, Surinam, Hamburg, London, New York, etc., ended up there either falling by the wayside or surviving with difficulty. In London, for example, it left only one printed witness (1836) and its replacement by an English text (1852) marked the disappearance of that community‟s Portuguese identity.

James Nelson Novoa, The Departure of Duarte de Paz from Rome in the light of documents from the Vatican Secret Archives

The article presents documents from the Vatican Secret Archives which help to reconstruct the circumstances involved in Duarte de Paz’s departure from Rome in the first months of 1538 due to his fall from favour in Curial circles in Rome and his definitive repudiation on the part of the Portuguese New Christians which he claimed to represent. It would seem that he left, ostensibly to reach Antwerp where he sought payment for the services rendered to the New Christians during his tenure in Rome as their agent through money taken from goods sequestered from the New Christians on the part of the Governor of the Low Countries. Apart from the intrinsic interest of additional knowledge about Paz himself it points out the divisions and inner disputes in the Portuguese New Christian organization itself in its struggle against the functioning of the Inquistion in Portugal.

Alexandre Reinel stands in the number of those New Christians Portuguese settled in Sephardic communities of Antwerp, Ferrara and Venice caught by the Portuguese Inquisition on returning to Portugal. Contact between those who left and those who staid was never really lost and we suspect an active epistolary maintained through some important agents, returning to Portugal for diplomatic reasons concerning the welfare of the Portuguese New Christians. Alexandre Reinel’s criminal deed in the Portuguese Inquisition stands therefore as a privileged source for the understanding of both the activities of those ho returned home as well of the Diaspora communities from which they were returning from.
