They come from a variety of archival sources in one of Europe’s most extensive and important archives which are linked to the social, cultural and economic life of the Catholic Church for several centuries and hence of intrinsic interest for scholars of who deal with the Middle Ages through to the nineteenth century. Formed after the incorporation of Rome into the unified state of Italy, this archive boasts a vast collection of holdings which concern virtually all the aspects of the life of the Catholic Church in Rome and beyond. The current section will make documents available to scholars which deal, in some way, with the activities and lives of Portuguese New Christians and Jews in the Early Modern period.

Held in the State Archives of Roma (Archivio di Stato di Roma: ASR) they nonetheless provide vital and often unique information about life in Rome in the Early Modern period and the rest of the world. Comprising a period which extends from the end of the fifteenth century to the late nineteenth, when, upon the incorporation of the Papal States into the Kingdom of united Italy in 1870 the notaries ceased to exist, they literally represent the activity of several hundred years. These notaries were linked to the activities of the Auditor of the Apostolic Chamber, the official who was a central part of the Apostolic Chamber, the administrative branch of the Roman Catholic Church which dealt with its finances throughout the world. The office of the Auditor of the Chamber was itself part of a complex system which already foresaw modern bureaucratic practices and was the head of a tribunal which heard and decided upon civil cases in the territories of the Pontifical States and beyond. As such the innumerable notarial deeds which these notaries undersigned and were privy to: contracts of various kinds, the acquisition of ecclesiastical benefits, acquittances, wills and testaments, letters of credit, have a bearing on the lives and activities of individuals the world over. All of the documents presented in this section are present in the deeds drawn up by the notaries of the Auditor of the Apostolic Chamber. They all involve, in some way, Portuguese Jews or New Christians and the dealings with people in Rome and elsewhere during the sixteenth century.

BIBLIOGRAPHY / BIBLIOGRAFIA
Castro, Jorge de. From the fifteenth century onwards this tribunal, which oversaw justice in the city of Rome and its environs was directed by an official, the Gubernator in alma Urbe eiusque territorio et districtu, Camerarius, the Governor of the City of Rome, and, at the same time, the Vice-Camerarius vel Camerarii locumtenens, the Vice-Chamberlain or deputy of the Apostolic Chamber. As the Governor he was the chief magistrate with jurisdiction over lay people and clerics alike and charged with maintaining public order, the supervision of the jails in Roman territory, and monitoring the activities of the city’s judges. He had the final say in criminal and civil cases and was even able to impose excommunication.
