Very few of the Florentine merchants who moved to Lisbon in the age of Portuguese expansion then moved back to their hometown: on the contrary, they settled and often underwent a process of naturalization. In other countries their behaviour was very different. This paper will discuss ‘models’ of settlement through the analysis of the formal and informal links existing within the Florentine communities abroad and between them and the local communities.

Francesco Guidi Bruscoli is researcher at the University of Florence, where he teaches Economic history. He is also Senior Research Fellow at Queen Mary University of London, and Visiting Fellow at Bristol University. His research concentrates mainly on Renaissance trade and banking. His publications include Papal Banking in Renaissance Rome, Aldershot, Ashgate, 2007. He is currently working on a book on Bartolomeo Marchionni.
